OVERVIEW

Background

Doomscrolling (also known as doomsurfing) is the act of consuming a large quantity of negative online news at once. It has been reported to be detrimental to mental health and worsened significantly during the pandemic.

Idea

Scrollaby is a digital lullaby for your social media feeds that hacks the habit of doomscrolling and allows you to scroll yourself to sleep. To get people off their social feeds and into the app, we targeted users while they were doomscrolling between 11PM and 3AM with sponsored canvas ads on Instagram and Facebook. The ads drew scrollers directly into the app without even realizing they’d left their social feed. We created the app, with 1000+ randomized sleep stories, sounds, and mesmerizing visuals, based on proven sleep science. The content tiles include HRV-breathing techniques, psychoacoustic music, quietly narrated sleep stories, ASMR sleep sounds, and looping visuals that the user can stare into as they scroll. The UI is designed to feel familiar and mimic common social platforms. The UX is a never-ending scroll of content in dark-mode.

Outcome

There are over 1 million people using Scrollaby’s proprietary sleep science for better sleep. We reached 70 million new people within the first month of launch. The app has a perfect 5-star rating on the app store. ZDnet described “How a Terrible Modern Habit is Being Turned into a Sleep Aid.” Apartment Therapy said “This App Can Help You Fall Asleep During Your Nightly Doomscroll.” App users have left reviews saying, “Way more relaxing than getting lost in Instagram at night!” and “This app slowed my active brain and got me back to sleep quicker than anything else I’ve tried.” The app is currently offered for free on the app store in order to best help people during these extreme times of sleeplessness due to the global pandemic, racism, political turmoil, and economic concerns.
