The casting director was tasked to find a family that we could authentically relate to and that we would naturally want to protect. Though largely silent and sleeping in the film, we should also want to know their back story - where they were coming from and going to and why - so a sensitive approach to casting was needed. The children were cast as real-life sisters to allow them the degree of naturalism necessary to quickly telegraph their relationship. But casting this film did not stop with casting the actors, as the role played by the family’s car would be such a critical one. It had to be a car that felt timeless - not futuristic, not vintage - and it needed to feel lived in and loved, and finally, a car we would also immediately understand was not a self-driving vehicle, to enhance the dream concept.
