OVERVIEW

Background

The Urbanista Los Angeles was created in collaboration between Urbanista, the Swedish audio brand, and innovation company Exeger, who have developed the Powerfoyle solar cell technology that converts any form of light into clean energy, and can be seamlessly integrated to the headphones design, making the solar cell technology barely noticeable as a design element on the product. The product is not only the first project utilising this new technology, but also the first time solar powered headphones have been made commercially available. During the product’s development process, some limiting factors during the design stages were to find the perfect balance between the size of the solar cell material on the product’s headband to maximise its charging capability, without compromising on visually appealing design aesthetic, form factor and comfortable long term wearability. Balancing these factors has resulted in being able to offer the optimal product experience with the headphones.

Idea

The Urbanista Los Angeles was created in collaboration between Urbanista, the Swedish audio brand, and innovation company Exeger, who have developed the Powerfoyle solar cell technology that converts any form of light into clean energy, and can be seamlessly integrated to the headphones design, making the solar cell technology barely noticeable as a design element on the product. The product is not only the first project utilising this new technology, but also the first time solar powered headphones have been made commercially available. The adaptation of the solar cell technology on the headphones proves that the technology is scalable, and can be applied at commercial mass production level on audio products, opening the door for exploring the next generation of solar charging audio products in the future.

Strategy

Urbanista Los Angeles is a next generation consumer audio product that uses solar and ambient light charging to provide virtually infinite playtime for the user. The product's unique proposition is achieved with the Powerfoyle solar cell that constantly charges the product when exposed to light, both indoors and outdoors. In practice, the headphones never stop charging whether in use or not. Users can follow the headphones solar cell's performance in real time with a mobile companion app that visually indicates the product's light charging levels and energy consumption (gain and drain). The product’s main components are the over-ear headphone design based on a previous Urbanista headphone product, with the addition of the redesigned, wider headband that integrates the solar cell. The product also includes an 80 hour battery reserve that makes sure the product remains charged even when used in low light conditions.

Execution

The Urbanista Los Angeles project was kicked off by Urbanista and Exeger in June 2020, and the product design was completed by September the same year, with first working prototype available in March 2021. The product was announced to media and consumers in April 2021, and was made commercially available to buy online at Urbanista.com and from retailers worldwide from October 2021. The adaptation of the solar cell technology on the headphones proves that the technology is scalable, and can be applied at commercial mass production level on audio products, opening the door for exploring the next generation of solar charging audio products in the future. The product is extremely relevant for the audio industry as it is the first solar powered headphones that have been made commercially available, and introduces a new, more sustainable source of energy for consumer audio products.

Outcome

The product has been a commercial success for Urbanista with the highest number of preorders, consumer and retail interest ever, and significant press coverage worldwide. The product announcement had a potential media reach of over 1B in the first 4 weeks, and over 3.2B to date globally. To date, the product has been covered in over 1000 articles, news stories and product reviews across the world both in print and online, generating significant interest in the Urbanista brand, in the product and in solar powered consumer tech products in general. To quote a few, Wired UK has called Urbanista Los Angeles the "next leap in headphone tech", and Tom's Guide called the product "one of the most impressive headphones ever created". The launch of Urbanista Los Angeles was a true breakthrough moment for the Urbanista brand, and a game changing event in the audio category.
