Description
We are in outer space. An astronaut is floating outside the space station when he notices something wrong: it’s a red alarm. The engineers at the ground control station start working to send some replacements to the astronaut. A cargo-rocket takes off and reaches the astronaut to deliver its load: a toilet paper roll, the longest available on earth. A tray approaches the astronaut and when he is that close to grab the roll, a small meteorite hits the tray and throws the roll far away. The astronaut starts chasing it: will he ever catch it?
Execution
The commercial was set in two different environments: The first environment was in outer space, where we see the astronaut and the space station (ISS like). Both are fully CG and animated without the use of motion control (for the camera movements) or motion capture (for the astronaut animation). The spaceman's face was shot in live action and then composited into the 3D model of the space suit. The second environment is the Control Room on Earth, which is a reinterpretation of the War Games' control room. The actors were shot on a sound-stage, against a green-screen, and then composited into the full CG environment. Again, we didn't use any motion control systems. The camera tracking was done with tracking software.
Software used: Modelling: Xsi/Blender Animation: Maya Rendering: Blender Cycle ( gpu rendering engine ) Compositing: Digital Fusion
