OVERVIEW

Background

Over the last decade, student math achievement has steadily decreased according to the National Assessment for Educational Progress. Today, only 37% of 4th grade students in the U.S. meet the minimum standards for mathematical proficiency. Although Ed tech has been around for years, it has yet to deliver – too often, new digital solutions still rely on old learning methods. If we want to see improved outcomes in student achievement, we have to start with them. And that was the starting point for the development and launch of Struggly.

Idea

Struggly is a new digital learning platform that combines three high impact research spaces in a unique digital learning experience: neuroscience, mathematics education and growth mindset. Students experience mathematics with a focus on strategizing, creativity, and persistence. As a visual creative connected subject and in an explorative, inspiring, and engaging way – all joyfully leading to a growing self-confidence in their intellectual abilities.

Execution

The aspiration and challenge was to design and work with the beauty of math and not to rely on a childish fantasy world - and thus to convince parents as well as children. We incorporated insights from game design, but created a unique tool that kids actually love to work and interact with. A one of its kind, completely self-explanatory learning experience that sparks curiosity and brings a new visual element to math learning.

Outcome

Struggly was launched in October 2022. In the first six months, 3,567 children have already experienced and engaged with maths in this beautiful, fun and superior way - in 106 school classes, 156 families and 14 countries. Together we have already celebrated 100,000 mistakes and unlocked 12,345 badges. We are still in the early stages - we are growing and enjoying every day.
