We hear the voice of a young woman, aged 20 or so. She tells us the story of a party she attended, or at least what she still remembers of it:

She and her friends had been drinking heavily … they'd drunk so much, they really shouldn't have driven home. But she'd said nothing, or hadn't insisted enough. Now her memories are filled with the sound of fire-truck and ambulance sirens, with the feeling of being trapped inside the vehicle, with the smell of blood all around her, with the sight of her friend's face against the steering wheel.

And the sadness of his parents at the funeral.

What she doesn't know today is whether she will ever walk again.
