OVERVIEW

Execution

We created an immersive demonstration that made the invisible problem visible: The Breathing Wall, a “living” tech-art installation.

Powered by micro-controllers and 384 fans, the Wall’s 192 bags inhaled and exhaled in real-time to the surrounding air quality indoors, supported by messages that displayed shocking educational health facts. This was created with Berlin media artist Nils Völker.

To ensure that the Wall could reach audiences everywhere, the design challenge was also to keep the Wall flexible and transportable. The Wall is made up of 12 separate modules held in a simple frame that can be easily assembled and configured to the various exhibition locations.

Outcome

The Wall travelled to exhibition halls and malls, averaging a high engagement time of 3 minutes with those who saw it. People were compelled to take photos and videos, which they posted on their Instagram and Facebook accounts. And, more Philips air purifiers were sold during the time the wall was up vs. before the wall; air purifier sales saw an uplift of 17% during the installation event timeframe.
