Description
Giving Away the Tools to Help Erase Hunger:
Instead of asking for help, we gave people the tools to erase hunger first in themselves. Then in others.
The Erase Hunger pop-up is made up of free packets of eating utensils that also have cards detailing the time and place where delicious food is served at Crossroads Community, a local soup kitchen and food pantry.
After grabbing a packet to eat their lunch or dinner, people easily handed out cards to someone in need.
Execution
Our Pop-up Popped Up All Over New York City:
As a movable feast, The Erase Hunger Project was designed as a pop-up to travel throughout the city—any place where people are hungry.
Made up of free packets of eating utensils, the pop-up called out to passersby to grab one to eat their lunch or dinner.
To their surprise, they discovered cards on the back of each packet to share with the hungry living on the street. The card listed when and where free food is regularly given out at Crossroads Community, a local soup kitchen and food pantry.
From March–September 2016, we covered 20 parks and food fairs In Manhattan. Plus, we supplied restaurants, delis and cafes with utensil packets.
By providing the tools to erase hunger for people, we turned them into activists helping those less fortunate living on the street.
Outcome
The Erase Hunger Project Erased Hunger:
As our pop-up traveled throughout New York City, we filmed the different events and created social media postings that included our edited film. All of which helped build buzz.
Over a four-month period, social engagement on Facebook increased by 150%.
Plus, we saw a 25% increase in people being fed at Crossroad Community. And a 15% increase in volunteers. More importantly, the project influenced dialogue and helped unite the community around the idea to help erase hunger. And it lifted contributions by 21%.
