When COVID-19 struck, New York was the epicenter. New Yorkers were inundated with data in the media - rising case numbers, increased hospitalizations, and spiking deaths. Northwell, New York’s largest healthcare system, wanted to offer hope in the form of positive data. So we created The Hope Tracker—a digital billboard that showed, in real-time, how many people recovered from COVID-19 at Northwell facilities. Each day, the number of recovered patients was tallied from each hospital, combined, and sent to the digital billboard to be updated. The outdoor billboard was featured at Madison Square Garden, next to the busiest travel hub in New York. Imagery on the board was also updated with real images from the Northwell hospitals themselves, putting human faces to the much-needed positive data. Northwell knew that New Yorkers everywhere needed to see the progress that was being made in a fight that previously felt unwinnable.
