OVERVIEW

Execution

The Ice Record Project is an innovative use of an existing technology. The purpose of the innovation was to create a new way to experience music-- one that heightened anticipation, much like music releases before the prevalence of digital formats. To listen, the recipient had to wait at minimum six hours to hear their record. And because the record was made of ice, it would not last forever. This temporary nature of the listening experience made it that much more valuable.

This ice record technology was created specifically for the Blue Ice single. The first component of the technology was the ice itself. One of the main challenges from the beginning was to perfect the ice grooves on the record. It was crucial to make sure no air bubbles prevented the grooves from freezing in a precise, clear form. After experimenting with different techniques such as adding dish soap to kill the surface tension, letting the water freeze in motion and many others, the solution was simple: Use distilled water to reduce the impurities that would cause bubbles and imperfections.

The second component of this innovation was the mold that would cast the ice record. After experimenting with many different materials we found that silicon is airtight, keeping the water in place. Silicon also expands, preventing the record from breaking as it freezes. The flexibility of the mold coupled with the round shape of the mold made for the easiest and quickest removal that we could find. This was important with a record made of ice, as you want the tracks to remain frozen for as long as possible.

The third component of this innovation was the inverted LP of the single. This would rest at the bottom of the mold and help the ice freeze accordingly.

Outcome

While only ten people were able to make the Ice Record first-hand, they shared their experience with the world. Our ten boxes generated over one hundred million media impressions through social media alone.

As a culture, we've become too accustomed to instant access. Our hope is that this innovation continues to have an impact on the music industry, inspiring artists to challenge themselves to find new ways to recreate the anticipation and surprise that music deserves.
