Background
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is an innovative female driven comedy set in New York’s Upper Westside Jewish community. Even though it’s a 1950’s story, Midge Maisel’s struggles are strikingly current today and her character is uniquely layered. She’s glamorous but tough, extravagant yet efficient, and both funny and vulnerable.
The show as well as the trailer speaks to women, young and old, who see themselves in Midge and who can relate to the notion that nothing can stop a woman with something to say.
Execution
The edit was crafted as a careful balance between storytelling and exuberance allowing the pure energy of the series to come through. The choice that best highlights this balance is the music cue, “Greatest Star” by Barbara Streisand. The lyrics reflect Midge’s desire to make it in showbusiness and her reality of starting as a complete unknown, “I’m the greatest star but no one knows…”. The power of Streisand’s voice emphasizes Midge’s determination in the face the many obstacles on her path to success, namely the expectations and cultural norms of her family, society and the time period.
