Description
In order to spread the word about the problems facing the Amazon Rainforest and the communities living there, we decided to give Pope Francis a gift that summed up the enormous material cost of certain practices to the world. How? We made a sculpture with materials at the core of the problem: wood from illegal logging, gold from illegal mining and a capsule with small amounts of polluted water and degraded soil. This gift and each
of the materials in it represent billions of dollars in losses to the planet and to mankind, making it the costliest gift His Holiness had ever received.
Execution
A 30 cm high and 35 cm wide sculpture weighing 1 kg was made from wood from illegal deforestation, gold from illegal mining and a small, sealed capsule containing small amounts of water polluted with mercury and degraded soil. Then, taking advantage of Pope Francis’ visit, we spread the news that in Peru he would be given the costliest gift he had ever received. This had the general public and the press looking forward to the
moment when the famous gift would be revealed. At the event held on the day of his visit to the Madre de Dios region, we gave him the piece and revealed to him, the media and the public the real message behind its high cost.
Outcome
+20,000,000 people reached.
+69% negative feeling toward the problems in the Amazon.
+30% in Google searches during the 24 hour period following delivery of the gift.
$317,073 earned media in 4 hours.
