Background
As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for Led Zeppelin, Fender and Smith & Foulkes took viewers on a psychedelic tour through a pivotal time in music. The film is shaped around Jimmy’s own testimony, describing the importance of his relationship with the iconic guitar. Immersing themselves in the heady days of the late 60’s, Smith & Foulkes creatively expanded around Jimmy’s narrative to focus on what happened when these two creative energies collided.
Idea
The last thing you want to do is to make a 'see what you say' kind of film, so the actual facts of the story could be conveyed by Jimmy’s own testimony, allowing for freedom to be more visually expansive. This gave us the liberty to interpret the events in more suggestive and atmospheric ways, conveying the unique energy of the time and illustrating key moments in the development of Led Zeppelin. The film shows how Jimmy’s personalisation of the Telecaster (into the famed dragon and mirror versions), helped take the band to previously uncharted sonic horizons.
Strategy
We didn't want a mini animated Jimmy running around having crazy adventures so we restricted his performance to the integral part of the story - playing the Telecaster. The visual magic then happens as a result of these two creative energies colliding, hopefully giving the audience more of a sense of what Jimmy was experiencing and what he was trying to achieve.
