Description

These TV spots create intruige by having contrasting stories told by the visuals and the audio. What you see is POV shots of everyday life, but what you are hearing is dramatic and emotionally tense - like a movie or a series. Only at the end of the spots do you realise that the main character, whose POV we are looking through, is actually watching a movie or a series on their mobile device, and what we're hearing is the audio from the show. These spots are to advertise the new app that allows consumers to watch DStv whenever, wherever.

Execution

These two spots were initially briefed in as YouTube -rollers, but client loved the idea so much that they wanted them made as TV ads.

The problem? Even though a better production value was now expected, the budget did not increase, and as we presented two scripts (so that client could select one) it was decided by client that we should produce both, despite our quote being submitted for a single advert.

In the end we managed to shoot two tv adverts for the price of one, and a fairly affordable one at that.

In order to meet this tall order, we got creative in the production of the shoots.

The two spots were shot in a single day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We could not run into any overtime due to the extremely tight budget.

We minimised the shoot costs by scripting the stories to be shot in a single set-up, so once the lighting and props were in place we could do multiple shots quickly, one after the other.

Shooting the adverts POV not only helped tell the story by placing the viewer firmly in the situation, but also removed the need for multiple cut aways and establishing shots.

The chosen lens was one that did could do justice to both close-up and middle ground shots.

When it came to casting, we saved budget by only having one of our cast members as an actual actress. The rest were chosen on look, as they didn't need to deliver dialogue.
