Description

Who knew a coin could have so much fun, this TVC follows the 'life' of a single dollar coin around New Zealand and the world.

Execution

Pacing, timings and transitions played a huge role in this TVC, so the director decided we needed to previs the entire commercial. We ended up with a very overlength (3min) fully CGI previs that the director and editor could use as a guide to prepare for the large scale 10 Day shoot around New Zealand. This previs, while not shown, played an integral part in shaping the final TVC.

The more apparent visual effects work also manifested itself in many forms throughout the live action components of the final TVC. It was integral that the CGI & animation done complimented the live action which primarily sets the scene and tone for any post work. The hero coin was animated in almost every shot so it could be specifically art directed after the shoot. One of the most difficult shots was the opening that includes a full CGI takeover from the factory wide into the coin press so that the camera could impossibly travel underneath the stamping device. There are many CG elements sprinkled throughout the TVC such as the conveyor belt and dust bunny under the couch cushions. And then of course are the fully CG sequences which include the inside of the stamping press, the inside of the Jukebox and the coin’s dream sequence.
