Description

Honda sponsors the Vietnam national football team.

Football (soccer) is the number sport in Vietnam and in the last few years the Vietnam national team is losing support due to poor performance and allegations of match fixings.

Execution

The idea of having national football player to hand deliver their match-winning jersey (the greatest gift a footballer can give to a fan) increased brand love for Vietnam Football team and Honda.

11 fans from different parts of Vietnam were randomly selected to be the recipient of this unique gift.

The campaign lasted for a week, starting 15 December 2014 during the Asean AFF Suzuki Cup.

Vietnam beat Malaysia in the fist leg of semi final 7 Dec 2014.

Different players traveling to different parts of Vietnam to deliver the jersey.

Outcome

Even though only 11 lucky fans received the jerseys, millions of football fans in Vietnam was touched by the effort.

Especially seeing some of the teary eyed and overjoyed fans when they were surprised to meet their football idol.

Objective for this campaign.

Honda through it’s sponsorship of the Vietnamese wanted to thank Vietnamese football fans for their support.

Vietnamese football was plagued by allegations of match-fixing from 2013 – 2014.

Understandably support for the national team was at an all time low.

Support for the national team increased by 150% after the activation which was launched during the Asean AFF Cup 2014.

The stadium in Vietnam whenever the national team played was packed to full capacity with a sea of red.”
