Overview

Background

HiLux has proven itself an enduring Australian icon. As loved today as the day it arrived on Australian shores 50 years ago. With countless HiLux vehicles driving across Australia, it has become a storied part of our culture.

This became the springboard for our idea. A story honouring the deep emotional connection between HiLux and driver. Knowing our audience wouldn’t resonate with an expected story, we needed a twist. So we told the story of a person from the afterlife reuniting with his one true love – his Toyota HiLux.

Execution

The film is a carefully styled modern thriller. Every detail, including the in-camera effects, were orchestrated to create an uneasy tension. Shot in a historical farmhouse, every frame was considered and crafted to be sophisticated and moody, without falling into existing horror tropes.

Outcome

Despite having strong rivals in the Australian market that had launched recent new generation models, HiLux was able to achieve the highest number of sales in a 12-month period in the vehicle’s history and, at the time, remain the highest selling car in the Australian market.
