Description
To be an assistant nurse is the most common job in Sweden. But few people understand how tough it really is. Every shift is packed with heavy lifting and physical work under great stress.
93 % of assistant nurses are women and they do the heavy labour of our time. But how do we get more people to understand that? By making them feel it.
That's why we compressed the normal 8-hour-shift of an assistant nurse into a 16 minute workout routine. That way, anyone can experience how tough an assistant nurse's job really is.
Execution
For the inaugural event, we built a gym on the fair as Sweden's traditional political week, where politicians of all parties meet with thought leaders and industry heads under casual forms. This is the only time and place where basically all relevant individuals are gathered in one place.
The 8 physical exercises are neatly illustrated and translate typical routines like sheet pulling into an exercise with rubber bands, kettle bells and weights.
Subsequent events are organised at the local level in existing fitness studios.
To support the events, we developed a 30 sec video that dramatizes the similarities between a male body builder's exercise and a female nurse's work.
Outcome
A large number of national and local politicians, including the prime minister of Sweden, Stefan Löfven, were reached and tried to conduct an assistant nurse's routine. Others included the minister of labour, Ylva Johansson, several party secretaries and leaders. Even the leaders of the negotiation delegation for the largest employer, the Swedish communes and municipalities, could personally experience how tough the conditions are.
For all local events, we managed to engage local politicians and journalists so that they both made the experience and reported about the workout and the tough working conditions.
The online video was amongst the most ever shared on Kommunal's Facebook, showing how many members were engaged to actively change the public opinion.
