OVERVIEW

Background

To showcase its carbon-neutral plans, Belong needed to create a film that was thumb stopping...quite literally.

On average, Australian thumbs travel across our screens 8,849m per month. That is the height of Mt Everest. Using this insight, we immersed a little Thumb character in a big serious context. And what's a bigger task than creating a photorealistic Everest and a thumb...climbing up the facade. We were tasked to create snowflake perfect and cinematographic CGI Himalayan mountainscape by using cutting-edge visual effects to narrate a whimsical journey that transcends the ordinary.

Execution

Thummit,' blends cutting-edge VFX with a surreal concept—Thumbie's ascent of Mount Everest. Meticulous wire-framing laid the foundation for CGI realism, with strategic lighting, texturing, and camera movements. Challenges, from blizzards to encounters with wildlife, fuelled creative innovation. We transcended both mountains and software, needing to model the thumb, build the environment and animate across Maya, Houdini, Nuke & Flame. Everest also comes with unchartered territory and we had the challenges of working out how you characterise a Thumb? How does the Thumb animate and how does it sludge through the snow and hop up a mountain? No challenge or mountain too small as we managed to reach new heights for this CGI campaign.
