OVERVIEW

Description

Politicians talk a lot about keeping America safe, yet continue to do nothing about gun violence. Last year alone, more Americans were shot and killed by toddlers than terrorists. In fact, toddlers gun down American citizens on a weekly basis. So to demand action from policymakers and shine a spotlight on these highly ignored facts we created a satirical campaign proposing a solution to the gun problem: "Lock-up the toddlers. Keep America safe."

Execution

The video was shared by The Brady Campaign on social media channels right before the final presidential debate, and without any paid media support, it went viral. The video drove to ToddlersKill.org, where there was content for voters to engage with and take action, including direct access to gun reform petitions, a gun fact checker and voter registration. In addition to the video and website, we held a Toddler Amnesty event in Texas (where they really love their guns), where for one day instead of taking away peoples guns like a typical amnesty event, we offered to take passersby’s toddlers “no questions asked” to keep them away from their guns.

Outcome

Until the last presidential debate, common sense gun laws had not been part of the conversation at all. As a result of the campaign, "Toddlers Kill" was picked up by several media outlets, news publications and TV shows – social media amplified the conversation, and the video went viral. Then at the final presidential debate Hilary Clinton referenced toddlers and gun safety with Donald Trump. Mission accomplished. The campaign succeeded in driving the conversation on the biggest stage in America.

More recently, during Trump's travel ban, the campaign resurfaced. It helped fuel the argument that more Americans are shot and killed by toddlers than terrorists, and the best way to "Keep America Safe" is common sense guns laws.
