Description

The final episode of "Fueled by Everything", and the release of the Mirai on the road, centered around the perfect day: October 21, 2015, the same day Marty McFly and Doc Brown arrived in the future in a trash-fueled DeLorean in Back to the Future, Part II—a day that had been hyped ever since the movie came out in 1989.

On that day, we premiered “Fueled by the Future,” which told the story of a real scientist and Back to the Future fan going on a journey to create hydrogen out of trash, fuel the Mirai and show his heroes, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, how the future has truly become reality.

Execution

One week out, on October 14, 2015, we teased the historic reunion of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd through pre-rolls and a special countdown site that hosted an interactive version of the DeLorean dashboard.

On the day itself, the episode premiered at a special press event in West Hollywood, complete with clock-tower set, a custom Mirai with gull-wing doors, a panel featuring Chris Hardwick that discussed what else from Back to the Future’s future has come true, and the handover of keys to the very first Toyota Mirai owners.

Outcome

“Fueled by the Future” garnered over 5 million views and 1 billion earned media impressions. We successfully hijacked the pop-culture conversation by becoming October 21’s number-one trending topic on Twitter and Facebook, even surpassing Back to the Future Day itself.

We reached mainstream press in several news shows, morning shows and publications, such as The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Vulture, Bloomberg, Reuters, Slate and CNN. But most importantly, we were able to turn the public’s perception of hydrogen around, from thinking of it as a chemical element to be feared to seeing it as an exciting fuel source for our future.
