OVERVIEW

Execution

"TREAD The Moon" has been invented for every runner to enjoy running exercise.

This device obtains the data of running speed, heart rate and the bone data with Kinect, and outputs the images and sounds using a game engine called Unity.

The floating particle on the screen, showing as a runner itself, changes colors in concert with his or her heart rate and becomes strenuous in concert with running speed.

Additionally, by running continuously, the running level increases, and the video and sound become richer.

The laser beams that fly to back of the screen signals levelling-up. The light posts that stretch from the ground are emitted by connecting with the rhythm of the sounds.

In fact, the article in the New York Times has reported that the sound during exercise has a good impact on the workout.

We will customize a treadmill by attaching a rotation sensor that detects rotation in the rail wheels using magnetism.

This rotation sensor senses the runner's speed.

We use a combination of Kinect and bone data to collect a person's movements.

Additionally, we attached a heartbeat sensor to the safety bar of the treadmill. By placing your fingers on the this sensor, the blood oxygen levels of the fingers that change according the heart rate can be detected.

The values of the heartbeat sensor and rotation sensor is transmitted through a microcomputer called "Arduino".

The technical director lead these technologies and three programmers lead the sensor and Unity developing.

They received no investment.

Outcome

We are not planning to sell "TREAD The Moon" itself. However, we are aiming for Fitness clubs in Japan to install the treadmill working with visuals to enjoy anywhere in Japan.

Therefore, everyone can enjoy the running experiences with new exciting visuals and sounds.

We are also planning to create numerous variations like not only running on the moon but in the water and chasing or being chased by someone.

The device was demonstrated at the SXSW festival for four days in Austin, Texas USA.

About 1000 people of diverse ethnicity, gender and age enjoyed.

During the four days, we got some international media interviews. Some of them were published as media articles.
