Description

For small national environmental organizations such as the foundation 'Stiftung Unternehmen Wald' it is very difficult to gain public attention. Main objective is to raise awareness for the need of reforestation and getting more sponsors for the cause.

With the help of an iPhone app the cause is spread virally on Facebook. In order to trigger the planting of a real tree the user: takes a pic, virtually places a tree in the pic and posts his creation on Facebook. In doing that the user shows his commitment to environmental issues and potentially mobilizes his network to join in.

The foundation 'Stiftung Unternehmen Wald' directly translates the actions of Treezer users into a donation that allows them to plant real trees.

The trees are partially donated in advance by so-called 'tree sponsors'. Due to these tree-contingents all Treezer activities are having a real impact: viral spread of the cause by Treezer users, planting of real trees and lastly positive PR for sponsors and donators. Additionally the commitment of the tree sponsor will pay off: He is present at every Facebook post.

Execution

Aside from its own promotion website www.treezer.de the mobile app is endorsed on relevant corporate websites like www.waldkaufhaus.de and www.wald.de.

For further distribution of its campaign Treezer was integrated in editorial content sites such as www.opongo.de, in blogs, i.e. www.appgefahren.de, and online review websites, i.e. www.appticker.de.

Additionally to the Treezer app the social network Facebook has been the most important element in order to share all posted Treezer pictures and spread the word.

Outcome

The campaign resulted in the planting of thousands of trees within the first weeks of its launch. Numbers increasing daily. Treezer has not only reached a wider public but also activated people's engagement. Since launch many more tree sponsors have signed up to support “Stiftung Unternehmen Wald”.

At low costs: Aside from the app programming costs there are no further expenses resulting in a rapidly growing response rate. Thanks to the users high engagement the cause has been virally spread. Ultimately we reached a wider target group by involving them in the process - creating a Treezer community.

This campaign is endorsed by classical PR, advertorials, microblogs and blogs, as well as websites and banners.
