Description

Every year since 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project has raised awareness and money during World Water Month, to aid children living without clean, safe drinking water. This year, the challenge was to broaden the initiative and extend the Tap Project online.

For World Water Month in March, we turned Facebook members into Taps. People could open their Tap with a small $5 donation via text or PayPal. The action not only provided clean water to children, it also let Facebook members choose friends to help keep the water running, turning the world’s largest social network into a water network.

Execution

For World Water Month in March, we turned Facebook members into Taps. People could open their Tap with a small $5 donation via text or PayPal. The action not only provided clean water to children, it also let Facebook members choose friends to help keep the water running, turning the world’s largest social network into a water network.

Outcome

The Tap Project took on an online life of its own, with people encouraging each other to join via Facebook and Twitter. Press coverage extended worldwide and 18 celebrities also joined the campaign, raising over $740, 000. Money that now can provide close to 30 million days of clean drinking water.
