OVERVIEW

Description

Able-bodied people don’t encounter the barriers their disabled fellow-citizens face on a daily basis. To raise more acute awareness and empathy, and create a collective consciousness, we turned the tables. We created a situation where able-bodied people were exposed to an obstacle that was easily accessible by wheelchair users.

Execution

Before the race, each runner receives their personal bib number. Each bib number has an RFID tag that is usually used to track runners time – from the moment the runner crosses the start, line till when he steps onto the finish line.

RunTour reprogrammed runners’ RFID tags to also track how many other runners they overtook - and to reward them accordingly. Each overtake became 1% off at the merchandising stands.

The day of the race every participant got the mechanics of the game explained to them at the registration stand.

At the end of the race, each participant got an SMS with the number of people s/he overtook, which they could apply as a discount at RunTour merchandise stands right on the spot.

Results:

With only 10 hours of RFID coding, 'Thousands of Winners' activation brought 394% in sales, helped 80% of all participants improved performance and registrations for RunTour next events increased by 12%.

The outcome was so impressive that since 2018 'Thosands of Winners' is now an integral part of each RunTour events.

RunTour helped amateur runners be quicker, have fun – and be winners no matter what. In doing so, RunTour met all their objectives in the most inspiring and useful way for people.

Outcome

The unique exhibition has given food for thought:

• Traffic on Sozialhelden’s project website increased by 300 %

• Wheelramp sales have increased roughly 200 %

• Donations for the funding of Wheelramps increased by 120 %

Equally important: Thanks to the special public attention to the exhibition, Raúl successfully engaged with the new German government, who have increased pressure on the private sector to make Germany accessible to all.
