The film was shot in regional and rural NSW (at times up to a thirteen hour drive outside of Sydney), which is naturally challenging- given the sheer distance, reduced resources and the associated travel of crew, supplies and equipment.

The Director said of Runaway,

"One of the main challenges was going to be making the journey as interesting as we could and that meant finding locations that felt intriguing and were hard to place. We travelled to a mining town in western NSW, where there had been a lot of filming of the desert landscape over the years, but no one had really focused on the town itself."

As with The Duel, Runaway also favoured practical effects wherever possible, and multiple rigs were created to follow the tyre on its journey and remain in camera as often as possible.
