OVERVIEW

Background

Situation:

Racism in football is an endemic problem. With a massive increase in racism cases recently, the need for meaningful action has become essential. The culture of racism in the stands not only tarnishes the sport but directly affects the fans, discouraging them from attending events.

Brief:

Previous campaigns to combat racism failed to curb the rise in incidents. One of the main obstacles to complaints resulting in punishment was the lack of clear evidence. Therefore, we needed a concrete approach to produce indisputable proof to ensure accountability.

Objectives:

To identify and help report instances of racism in stadiums, using our broadcasting

tools to contribute to a significant increase in the number of punishments.

Idea

We have reinvented the way we use our exclusive stadium cameras to identify racist acts among fans. The idea was to collect evidence of criminal acts to help authorities punish offenders.

Now, we are training an AI integrated with stadium security cameras to identify discriminatory acts more quickly and efficiently. With the implementation of this technology, we will expand our action alongside confederations and other sports organizations, taking an important step in the fight against racism on a global scale.

Strategy

We focused the activation in stadiums hosting competitions broadcast by Paramount+: the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana. Using our exclusive cameras in the fight against racism, with the specific aim of enhancing the security of football fans and identifying racists in the stadiums. With the success of the initiative, we want to evolve and expand the technology by training an AI integrated with stadium security cameras to identify discriminatory acts more quickly and efficiently. We plan to present it to confederations and other sports organizations, taking an important step on a global level.

Execution

In addition to featuring anti-racist content on social media and partnerships with football influencers, as the official broadcaster of the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana, Paramount+ has rights to exclusive cameras. Instead of using them to capture new angles on the field, we used them to catch racists in the stands.

Outcome

The result was a notable increase of 50% in racism reports and the identification of 18 criminals with solid evidence, contributing to stricter rules against racism at football events and providing a safer experience for fans in stadiums, aligning the Paramount+ brand with values of inclusion and respect. Such a great success, that we are evolving the initiative by implementing AI in security cameras to make identification even faster and to present this idea to confederations and sports bodies to expand the action to the rest of the world.
