Background

There are around 400 thousand Alzheimers’ patients living in Turkey, unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease. That is why the patients and their loved ones feel desperate towards this disease, they feel like there are nothing they can do make it better.

Idea

Although Alzheimer’s has no cure, we were committed to find a way to slow down the progression of the disease. With some research, we discovered that reading books helps slow down the progression of the disease. Inspired by this fact that can shine a light to the hopeless families suffering from Alzheimers’, we decided to motivate the patients to read books. However, this was not going to be easy.

Strategy

In order to motivate the Alzheimer patients to read books to slow down the progression of their disease, we had to convince them first. It was impossible to make sure the patients would actually read books. That is why we decided to take advantage of the growing trend of e-books and have patients read books for the Storytel mobile application.

Execution

We recorded Alzheimer’s patients reading classic novels and edited them in a studio. Then, we placed the recordings in the digital library of the Storytel mobile application. The recordings were not perfect, some of the patients paused, some of them got confused. This imperfect experience raised awareness about Alzheimer’s disease via Storytel. Also in the application, we used banners to get the attention of the users. We gifted our subscribers with free Storytel trial to increase penetration.

Outcome

In total, 20 Alzheimer’s patients contributed to the project. The audio recordings of classic novels read by the patients were listened to 123 thousand times. In addition, 5500 people used our one month free Storytel campaign.
