Execution

Runners attached this new WEARABLE_BANANA on their wrist and actually ran the whole marathon. Each runner received over 200 real-time cheering Twitter messages during their run.

And of course the marathoners ate the WEARABLE_BANANA after they crossed the finish line, providing not just race data but also potassium and energy! Showing that the WEARABLE_BANANA was extremely practical and functional, and proving that DOLE bananas were the perfect solution for recovery from race exhaustion.

All other runners who didn’t have a WEARABLE_BANANA on their wrist, knew about the project through other media, at DOLE banana recharging points, or actually saw the runners wearing them and run by them.

Honest and exciting comments from the runners like, “I can’t believe I ran with a banana! But it’s extremely practical! It’s amazing!” “The cheers on the DOLE banana kept me going!” “I was able to finish because of this banana! Thank you!” “I was surprised with all the information and cheers, it’s everything a runner needs!” “And it’s delicious! A world’s first taste!” Which was all broadcasted on multiple national news programs.

The runners were able to run faster than their aiming finish time, owing to the WEARABLE_BANANA.

On the web, the tech world, the fitness world and even the culinary world, all went bananas! “Forget the Apple Watch!” “The World's First Smartfruit!” “Possibly the most tastiest gadget of 2015!” Spread not only within Japan but to 178 countries worldwide!

Media impression was worth over 4,400,000 USD with no media cost, reaching more than 45,000,000 people in Japan alone. The number of WEARABLE_BANANAs were limited, but the nation understood the benefits and usefulness of the whole idea. Which lead to, most importantly, the sales of the DOLE Bananas shooting up to 193% more than before the race, all owing to the WEARABLE_BANANA.

Outcome

First cut open a real DOLE banana, and remove the fruit. Then insert thin micro LED chips, batteries and a slightly smaller DOLE banana back inside the peel.

The marathoner’s race time, lap time and heart rate was displayed in real-time on the WEARABLE_BANANA enabling the marathoner to run in a flat pace not to over run and consume all of the energy.

There were 6 energy supply points along the marathon course, where you can energize yourself with DOLE bananas, but the course was wide and over crowded with 36,000 runners. So in order not to miss and skip the replenish points, the WEARABLE_BANANA showed “CHARGE POINT” on the banana peel when the runner was getting close by, using real-time GPS data.

Even real-time cheers from family and friends through Twitter were displayed onto the banana peel, reaching the marathoners directly, boosting and supporting them to cross the finish line, especially when the race gets tough in the later half.

When the runner finally finished the race, the WEARABLE_BANANA automatically streamed the word “FINISH TIME” with the actual time, and “CONGRATULATIONS.” This was possible by combining real-time data linked with the official RFID chip provided by the Tokyo Marathon organization, which every single marathoner had to attach to their shoe to calculate their running time.

And an “EAT ME!” sign was flashed at the end to encourage the runner to actually eat the WEARABLE_BANANA to supply the final energy empty body. The DOLE banana used in the WEARABALE_BANANA was high in potassium and citric acid compared to other brands, which helps the marathoners recover faster after the race.

In case of emergency the runner could just eat the WEARABLE_BANANA as an urgent energy supply.
