Background
Swiggy is India's largest food delivery app, employing over 1,00,000 delivery partners. But blue-collared professionals in India don't enjoy the same dignity of labour as white-collared professionals. One apparent indicator of this inequality? They're never referred to by their names. This simple act, which makes the person at the other end your equal and establishes a level of intimacy/familiarity between two people, makes the person better placed economically uncomfortable in India. In Swiggy's case, therefore, the delivery partners are often just called 'Swiggy' by customers. Swiggy's delivery partners indicated this made them feel disrespected, and rightly so. We wanted to change this deeply-rooted cultural behaviour and get customers to start calling Swiggy's delivery partners by their names, which are visible on the Swiggy food delivery app.
Execution
This is the story of a boy christened Swiggy. It opens on a man in a license office. As his name 'Swiggy' is called out, he shirks. From here, the film flashes back through his life and we see how he reacts when his name comes up in different situations. We see him sulking when he sees his name on his cake; we see him run away from a girl when he's forced to introduce himself; we see him hiding during rollcall in class; and we see him lose focus while playing cricket.
Finally, we see him in his current avatar - as a Swiggy delivery partner - and how his smiles gives way to a frown when the customer calls him Swiggy. The film ends with the message, "Like you, our delivery partners too have nice names. So next time, don't call them Swiggy. Call them by their name."
