OVERVIEW

Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

The 2030 Calculator helps manufacturing brands to easily understand the carbon footprint of the products they produce. By becoming transparent regarding the carbon footprint of products brands enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions, building trust and customer loyalty.

The 2030 Calculator is a proactive initiative to democratize product carbon footprint calculations. Giving the upper hand to small and medium-size brands who want to challenge bigger brands by making sustainable production and low-impact products a competitive edge.

The bottom line is carbon labeling need to happen now to make sure consumers can make more impact-aware purchase decisions.

Background

Small and medium brands are held back from becoming impact transparent about their products due to complex and costly methods. There was a clear need for a new service enabling brands to calculate their product's carbon footprints, democratizing the ability to carbon label products.

The challenge was that until now, there was no standard methodology or tool that allowed for the calculation of the carbon footprint of specific products using a scoring system that allowed for the direct comparison of products across brands (and product categories). Other life cycle assessment methodologies are complex, time-consuming, costly, and not standardized.

The solution was developed to have a long-term impact as an open platform solution enabling all brands to access and share emission data.

The budget was limited. Research and testing were made over a period of 8 months before a successful prototype was built, a beta release followed in July 2020.

Describe the idea

People are starting to understand that everything we consume, being products, services, transportation, or investments, have two prices: One that we pay with money for the service provider and the other that the current service creation value chain on almost any industry, puts on the environment, society and therefore on our wellbeing.

Legislation and government systems will eventually do their part but citizen activism and environmental data provide us with the tools for creating new business models and logic that helps us all to take our everyday responsibility and create pressure with awareness on these burning issues.

The 2030 Calculator is a proactive initiative to democratize product carbon footprint calculations. Giving the upper hand to small and medium-size brands who wants to challenge bigger brands by making sustainable production and low-impact products a competitive edge.

What were the key dates in the development process?

January 2020:

• Pre-study indicates that it will be difficult to use LCA data due to its variety in structure and content.

February 2020:

• New function and scope of the service, the software shall help companies to do climate calculations of their products.

• Defining the structure of the tools functionality and calculation method

• Development of the calculation method and defining the system boundary of what emission should be included in the calculations.

• Create a ground for visualization for the calculator

• Iterative product development focusing on functionality and underlying calculations.

March 2020:

• Screening of available databases and recommendations, both commercial and open-source

• Open source data was confirmed as sufficient in the MVP of the product.

• Adding an of process data, as there is a great variety in the amount of energy for the assembly process of the product.

April 2020:

• UX testing

• Design and communication sprint

June 2020:

• Quality assurance by EY

July 2020:

• Beta launch

• Beta testing with brands

• Full endorsement and support from UNFCCC

September 2020:

• Climate calculations for specific customers

• Verification and adding factors to 2030-calculator

December:

• Version 1 launch

January 2021

• Ongoing, Commercial database integration

• Adding of an intermediate process step in the production

• Implementing a commercial database for better quality and coverage of materials

February:

• Full endorsement and research support from Oxford University ICC SME Climate Hub

Describe the innovation / technology

The 2030 Calculator was developed to enable manufacturing brands to quickly and easily begin calculating cradle-to-gate carbon footprints of their products. It does not require specific subject matter what expertise – everyone can use the 2030 Calculator.

The 2030 calculator uses emission data of raw materials as a starting point for each calculation. There are currently close to 1,000 material impact factors available from multiple open and commercial data sources including EcoInvent, ICE, Defra, and a variety of validated, open material LCA libraries. The material data is updated continuously to ensure that your calculation is as accurate as possible.

Product categories are supported by the 2030 Calculator:

Apparel / Shoes / Bags & Accessories / Furniture & Household Goods / Jewlery & Watches / Garden & Pets / Hobby & Crafts / Sports & Outdoor / Toys & Baby

The 2030 Calculator is a proactive initiative to democratize product carbon footprint calculations. Giving the upper hand to small and medium-size brands who wants to challenge bigger brands by making sustainable production and low-impact products a competitive edge.

Describe the expectations / outcome

Since its launch, it has been adopted by hundreds of companies from small start-ups to some of the largest multi-national global 500 enterprises from around the world and across all industries and product categories.

It has generated invaluable recognition for Doconomy in global media and from organizations such as the University of Oxford Net Zero Initiative, who wrote ’The 2030 Calculator has the potential to help thousands of companies with their required transformations to meet their climate targets and align with a global pathway to net-zero.’ with over +3000 calculation have been performed.

The solution was developed to have a long-term impact as an open platform solution enabling all brands to access and share emission data.

The methodology is being extended to other product categories- from apparel to shoes, furniture, food & drinks, and consumer electronics and the platform will enable publishing product carbon footprint calculations to an open platform.
