OVERVIEW

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

This is a film that takes that small, two-letter word you see on every piece of journalism in The New York Times—By’—and gives it dimension. It celebrates the 1,700 unique people behind the reporting, bringing us closer to them as humans and showing how that humanity gives The New York Times's journalism greater depth, richness and color.

Each scene is a glimpse into the life behind the By, using archival footage shot by journalists and woven with sound bites to depict the complex, hopeful, turbulent and rewarding relationship each journalist has with their journalism.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

Our audience is diverse in terms of ethnicity, gender and geographical location, but many have been slow to subscribe to The New York Times because they perceive us as an institution that’s too large and homogenous to need their support.

That led us to turn the camera on the diverse spectrum of journalists who encompass The New York Times, showing their humanity by giving a window into their personal worlds, ultimately helping readers see themselves in The New York Times, and see the humans that make up the institution.

Tell the jury about the sound design.

The pace is set by the human voices and the word By. Each time the word changed typographically, we were thrown into a different world using dynamic SFX and journalistic sound bites, which guided the narrative and showed the wide spectrum of emotions that depict the relationship between a journalist and their journalism.
