OVERVIEW

Background

Billy Wilder, a filmmaker whose name might not be instantly recognizable, is the genius behind some of the most iconic moments in cinema history. Despite directing classics like ”Some Like It Hot” and “Sunset Boulevard”, his name often takes a back seat to the stars and scenes he helped create. Wilder’s journey from a journalist in Europe to a Hollywood legend is a story of resilience, innovation, and unparalleled creativity. This exhibition at MIS aims to bridge that gap, introducing new audiences to Wilder’s extensive oeuvre while offering long-time fans a deeper dive into his creative genius. The exhibition is designed to be an immersive experience, transforming the museum into a space where visitors can walk through recreated sets and pivotal scenes from Wilder’s films, enhanced with archival materials and multimedia presentations. This approach not only celebrates Wilder’s contribution to cinema but also aims to provide an engaging and educational

Describe the creative idea

The core idea behind the visual identity for the Billy Wilder exhibition is to create a powerful connection between the audience and Wilder’s cinematic legacy. Since Wilder’s name isn’t as widely known as the iconic scenes he directed, the challenge is making that link clear and compelling. We leveraged unforgettable scenes, like Marilyn Monroe’s dress billowing over a subway grate, to draw attention and connect these moments to Wilder. The visual identity blends classic Hollywood aesthetics with modern design elements, making it feel both timeless and contemporary. The tagline, “You know the icon, now meet the creator,” invites the audience to delve deeper into Wilder’s masterpieces. This strategy honours Wilder’s work and positions the exhibition as an exciting journey of discovery for a wide range of visitors.

Describe the execution

The execution of this project revolves around a cohesive visual identity that works across various platforms and materials. The design features a clean, bold typeface to ensure Billy Wilder’s name is prominent and readable. Our logo, featuring Wilder's iconic hat and glasses, captures his distinctive-personality and filmmaking-legacy. Iconic images from his films are subtly integrated into the background, enhancing his name without overshadowing it. The color-palette combines classic black and white with accents of Persian Plum red for richness and depth. Innovative display methods, such as interactive digital installations and large-scale projections, are used at the museum entrance to attract attention. The design is adaptable for merchandise, social-media, and promotional materials, ensuring a consistent brand presence. A comprehensive style guide maintains brand integrity, and a branded webpage on the MIS website offers more information, a preview of exhibits, and online ticket booking, ensuring a holistic approach both physically and digitally.
