OVERVIEW

Description

The Spanish Ministry of Health official hotline number is 016, to help and attend to female victims of gender violence. Television news programmes are legally obliged to mention it each time there is a news item on gender violence. However, this number did not previously appear anywhere on the Internet. In Spain, female victims are increasingly younger; their average age has dropped 3 years only between 2009 and 2010. However, young people today turn to the television much less for information, and use the Internet much more.

Execution

The way of communicating this information was so convincing and blunt that the videos went viral and became news.

Although time has gone by, if you are a victim of gender violence and decide to type a search into Google on, for example, ‘How to cover up a fat lip’, ‘How hide a black eye’, etc., you will still find video-advice that will tell you how to find help: by ringing 016.

Outcome

The homemade videos had over 300,000 hits in 4 days and the numbers keep skyrocketing. They have become permanent Internet content. They featured on the front pages of the main female digital media and appeared in the most important Spanish media sources (the newspapers El País, El Mundo, Radio Nacional de España).

The campaign went viral on social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Tuenti) and 90% of viewers who could be verified (registered YouTube users) were women from 18 to 44 years old.To protect the victims, the Ministry of Health refuses to provide data about the people who ring 016, which is an anonymous and free number. To us, the result is entirely worthwhile if only 1 girl has called to ask for help.
