OVERVIEW

Execution

We created an encrypted language called ALTphabet, matching the ALT key with other keyboard letters. The aim of this tool was to symbolically protect online messages to stimulate curiosity and engage more people in the campaign. The code ALTphabet was developed in seven languages (Italian, French, German, English, Bulgarian, Greek) to overcome the differences between the keyboards of each country involved. People can decode/encode their messages through a translator on altphabet.org. To raise awareness and increase participation, articles written in Altphabet were published by professional journalists on important newspapers to invite people to use the code and spread the message.

Outcome

Overall the articles written in ALTphabet have been shared hundreds of times, stimulating the online conversation and generating hundreds of posts on Facebook and tweets all around Europe written in ALTphabet. The day of the launch many other blogs spontaneously joined the initiative by writing their posts in ALTphabet and the campaign was featured on radios and TV. The results of the campaign was already tangible from the very first day of the launch: signatures increased by 700% and signed by influential politicians such as the Euro parliamentary Martin Shulz and the Italian presidential candidate Stefano Rodotà.
