OVERVIEW

Background

Deportivo Xejuyup is the last Mayan soccer team in the world, more than a soccer team it’s a cultural expression. Its uniform is inspired by their mayan tradition as it shows the mayan worldview. The players dream of reaching the first division, but more importantly, they fight to keep their ancestral legacy alive. The team does not count on any resources for its operation, they survive on what the players can contribute in the midst of a difficult economic situation, which is why the team could disappear. For its part, Claro believes that through technology, the lives of people and communities can be better. This is why the brand sets out to save Deportivo Xejuyup, using its technology and knowledge.

Idea

In-order that the last Mayan soccer team could keep on playing with their feet, they learned to play it with their hands. And relearned how to pass, shoot and score, they relearned how to play soccer; they brought their passion for sports and love for their culture to digital scenarios. The last Mayan soccer team became the first Mayan team in e-sports. Therefore, the Ancestral Streamers were born.

Strategy

To save a team from the past we used the platforms of the "future". We incorporated Deportivo Xejuyup and its ancient origins to one of the biggest trends in the modern world, e-sports. Being part of contemporary culture, this ancient team generated content, was able to find new fans and discover new forms of financing to avoid its disappearance. Sport would be the bridge that would unite 2 different worlds until now, and the brand's services would be the basis to make it possible.

Execution

Ancestral Streamers was developed in two stages:

First Stage: For approximately 2 months the team received training from a professional gaming team (Janus). The training sessions involved national and regional champions of the FIFA video game. In addition to knowledge, they received the technical resource to play: consoles, controls, internet connection.

Second Stage: We used the brand's digital channels and also its regional sports channel to invite the gamer community to play against the only Mayan soccer team, which was now part of e-sports. We developed different live broadcasts (Facebook Gaming and Twitch) in which Deportivo Xejuyup players played against local influencers and gamers from the region and the world.

Each game became a meeting of cultures, but also an excuse to support the team with bits, stars, donations, comments, etc. All to save a cultural legacy.
