Description

The design symbols were single Kanji (Chinese characters) for each poster. Since Kanji are ideograms that convey the meaning with just one character, they were combined with illustrations consisting of simple lines to form design that would communicate the message for better etiquette in a speedy and friendly way.

Foreign visitors had high interest in Kanji, and this proved to be an effective motif for foreign visitors to notice the posters.

Execution

The etiquette posters using Kanji (Chinese characters) as a motif, were posted at all 179 stations of Tokyo Metro in the hallways and railcars. Different posters were posted every month. Since these posters were seen by passengers every day, they served as triggers for action as well as continuation. The Kanji (Chinese character) motif were placed at the center of the design, making the posters eye-catching without being buried among the other posters. Using simple lines to tell the story, the design construction contributed to leaving a strong impression of the etiquette posters toward customers.

Outcome

The simple line illustrations proved to be very friendly communication, and were evaluated highly by customers. The posters were featured on major portals such as Yahoo! News, Excite News, and were also featured in the website for the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation. In addition to this, the posters were also used as teaching material for moral education in Japanese schools. Queries also reached the client from Asian countries, where Kanji are used on a daily basis. As a unique form of etiquette poster, the design has attracted interest from many organizations and countries.
