Description

The BBC Olympics app was a key part of the BBC’s vision to ensure that our audience never missed a moment of the first truly digital Olympics.

The app streamed every moment of every event through 24 live streams. As exclusive UK video rights holders, we served 2500 hours of live Olympic action over 3G and wifi as well as hundreds of highlights clips.

It was downloaded more than 1.9 million times on Android and iPhone in the UK, achieved 158 million page views, 27 million visits and more than five million video requests.

The app was a hybrid proposition bringing together a web-based content proposition and augmenting it with native features such as customization and offline reading.

Main app features:

- Up to 24 live video streams plus live BBC One and BBC Three network coverage

- Homescreen featuring headlines, mini medals table and video highlights

- Daily live text commentaries written by BBC journalists, creating a minute by minute timeline of the day’s highlights

- Medals table

- A dynamically generated page for all of the 36 Olympic sports with key facts, stories, video, schedule and results and guides to each sport

- A dynamically generated page for every Olympic athlete with key facts, stories, video and medals info

- A dynamically generated page for every competing country with key facts, stories, video and medals info

- A comprehensive results and schedule service

- Customisable navigation (iOS only)

- Offline reading of the top stories (both iOS and Android)

The app achieved four stars in iTunes and 3.5 stars in Google Play and overwhelming positive feedback from users, industry and even Team GB athletes in the Olympic village.

We believe the app should win this category because of its huge popularity and unparalleled ability to provide UK app users the definitive guide to the Olympics. The app’s ease of use and the wealth of content and features made it a key part of the BBC’s strategy to deliver the first digital Olympics and ensure that users never missed a moment.
