Description

Is this the nerdiest, but coolest thing we’ve ever done? Quite possibly.

We were asked by CBS Action to think of ways to promote new screenings of Star Trek to the UK audience. Well, you’ve got to think big. So we invented a matter transporter.

Built using the Aurasma augmented technology platform, we created an app specifically for use at the Destination Star Trek event in London (October 2012). By pointing their app at a specially constructed stage at the CBS stand, eager Trekkies were able to beam themselves off our Star Trek transporter at the event.

In just 2.5 days the app completed more than 6,000 beam ups and was downloaded almost 3,000 times.

By creating a memorable experience for Trekkies at the event we created a real buzz about CBS Action. Plus, everyone who used the beam me up experience downloaded and left with an app full of branded content, interviews, trailers and show times. Additionally users were encouraged to share branded images taken during the AR experience to social media, furthering our reach.

Execution

We designed and built a full-scale Star Trek matter transporter and an accompanying app. The transporter was effectively one huge augmented reality trigger which worked together with our AR enabled app to beam users off the stage.

Users would activate the app, point their device at our transporter and see their friend beam out on screen. This experience could be shared through social media, while the app itself was loaded with CBS Action content.

Ultimately we wanted to raise brand awareness, and make the audience aware that CBS Action was the place to go for Star Trek.

Outcome

In just 2.5 days the app completed more than 6,000 beam ups and was downloaded almost 3,000 times. Plus, each person who used our experience left with a good impression of the brand and an app on their phone which was full of CBS content.
