Description
Put Stephen’s stamp on the Ed Sullivan Theater, while honoring its history.
Through many intensive sessions with Stephen and his team, we arrived at a design that fused the historical and the contemporary. The stage design environment highlighted the existing theater architecture while adding new accents—color-changing light boxes, wood shelves and backstage brick walls. Ornately detailed columns played alongside colorful, glowing walls. Large LED screens and lighting made the set easily transformable.
Execution
The final design seamlessly blended the new and the old into a flexible, hardworking space with a truly unique personality. It was hard to tell where the scenery ended and the theater began.
Outcome
The set design for The Late Show has been featured in Fast Co. Design, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and numerous other publications. And guests—including first lady Michelle Obama—frequently remark on it as they step onto the stage. But best of all, Stephen feels right at home, as do 3 million television viewers, 5 nights a week.
