Overview

Background

Bolia is a Danish furniture retailer that designs and sells New Scandinavian Design. The company puts sustainability at the heart of everything they do and are constantly striving to become even more sustainable. This goes all the way from their manufacturing, to their delivery, to the materials used to make their furniture.

One such sustainable innovation they’ve created is Bergo, a fabric made from recycled polyester made of plastic bottles. No new raw materials are used in its production, and the chemicals are 100% degradable and completely harmless.

Bolia wanted to find a way to make their Brand Book more sustainable. They print 1900 copies of their brand book and distribute them among all their stores. Their Brand Books showcase the unique aesthetics of their products as well as the entire lifestyle built around the brand. It’s about aesthetics, design and fashion. And in 2019, it became about sustainability.

Idea

One of Bolia’s core beliefs is that with great design, comes great responsibility. This means they are extremely picky when it comes to their materials. They pay very close attention to how their designs come to life, and try to support local manufacturers in Denmark and Europe to minimise transportation costs and their carbon footprint.

The creative idea was to inspire people to make more sustainable choices. We wanted to create something that was designed to be reused and reshaped. That’s how we came up with ReCover, a cover for Bolia’s 2019 brand book made from Bergo fabric.

The 2019 brand book was targeted to the press and aims to present the unique aesthetics of Bolia’s products. It’s a coffee table book printed on the finest quality paper and contains 8 fold-out double pages that reveal hidden photographs, giving a deeper look at the furniture and its beautiful details.

Execution

ReCover, made from Bergo fabric, comes in 7 different colours. It was designed to be reused and reshaped, giving the materials new life over and over again.

What does that mean?

That means that as well as being Bolia’s brand book cover, ReCover can also be used as a laptop sleeve, a placemat and a dish cloth.

Inside ReCover is a guide with instructions on how to assemble the fabric for the three uses mentioned above. The guide is just an inspiration for how to give the cover a new purpose – there are many more options, but the only limit is the user’s creativity.

When used as the brand book cover or a laptop sleeve, the key element on ReCover is the adjustable closing system: it has two metal buttons and an faux leather strap that wraps around the buttons to close it and keep its contents secure.

Outcome

ReCover was designed to inspire people to make more sustainable choices. By putting the product and the fabric physically into people’s hands, we enable them to experience what sustainable design feels like.

There were 1,900 copies of the brand book printed and to date, 11,000 metres of Bergo fabric have been sold. As well as being available in 7 different colours, Bergo is also available in 20 different Bolia furniture series in 53 countries.
