OVERVIEW

Description

The stamps had to appeal to both the traditional and knowledgeable collector, paying homage to the classic comic design whilst at the same time communicating a sense of fun and echoing the childish pleasure gained by the young reader of comics.

Execution

Showing the front cover of the comic fulfilled the historical accuracy of the brief, appealing to the avid collector. Covers were chosen because they were the very first issue of the comic or because they worked particularly well at such a small scale. Portraits of the favorite characters from the various titles were then cropped in a similar scale to add some energy and fun to the stamp. Choosing the final portraits and covers entailed hours of debate and many days rummaging through vast archives in dusty basements to find the perfect images.

Outcome

The issue proved to be one of the year's most popular issues, selling out and creating a huge amount of PR in the national press, on TV and radio and even being projected 40ft tall on the buildings where the Beano and Dandy were first printed.

The stamps and presentation packs have also won several design awards.
