OVERVIEW

Description

How could we integrate this proud tradition into the digital experience without compromising the modernity? Our objective was to achieve the best of both worlds.

Our solution was to combine past and present together– employing the latest, ultra-modern digital design tools to bring history to life. We created a rich, interactive timeline where every aspect of the Royal Mail’s history was meticulously researched and then presented in a pioneering way.

The result is visually pleasing and irresistibly engaging.

Execution

Multiple layers of multimedia and multisensory story telling take the user from the earliest days of the mail right up to the present. Stylised, animated backgrounds represent each era while evocative sound design brings bygone worlds to life. The multi-layered parallax empowers users to take deep dives into the events and characters that intrigue them the most. The narrative starts in the early 1500's and, as with all the best stories, even comes with a surprise ending.

This is a huge amount of content and we have succeeded in building a framework that loads and moves it around smoothly and successfully.

Outcome

The timeline is used by everyone from primary school children to post-graduate students. Loved by all who explore it, it has attracted great press coverage and industry praise.

The final solution scales to deliver an optimised experience relevant to the viewer’s device, across desktop, iPad & mobile.

With a dwell time of a massive 5' (benchmark 2') and a bounce rate of 30% this has proved a highly popular part of the site with its own unique following. The client is delighted and will be committing to new engaging content as the Royal Mail story continues!
