Description

Usually, once someone donates money, that's it. So what often happens is a phenomenon called "disaster amnesia." In other words, people forget about the problem as time passes. While the Kumamoto earthquake received extensive coverage shortly after it occurred, coverage gradually decreased with time. However, just because something isn't being reported on doesn't mean that support is no longer needed. This new fundraising initiative aims to promote sustained support. The ¥2,000 price of the cardboard Kumamoto Castle(full donation) helps support reconstruction efforts, and the roughly 35 minutes people spend building the castle, as well as the time they spend looking at it afterward, ensures that they never forget about Kumamoto Castle. Thus, this project prevents “disaster amnesia”.

Execution

This project was launched on April 16, 2017, exactly one year after the Kumamoto earthquake. A charity event at Tokyo's Roppongi Hills was held to kick off the project, with the aim of educating attendees of the current state of Kumamoto Castle and the damage caused by the earthquake. Cardboard Kumamoto Castles were sold at the event, donations were collected, and attendees were invited to write messages of support. At the same time, the castles were made available for sale online.
