Description
On November 19th, the most popular female TV presenter in Guatemala overtook social media by uploading a video announcing her own disappearance and blaming the Congress as responsible. Her audience was outraged, as they couldn’t believe such a tragedy. On her next broadcast she appeared dressed like a man, stating that her feminine side had been forced to disappear, due to constant sexual harassment and the absence of a law that classifies this as a crime. Soon after, other influential women followed suit, changing their appearance and uploading their videos, inviting other women join the movement by using the hashtag #CanBeAWoman, while exerting pressure on Congress to create a law that classifies sexual harassment in public places as a crime.
In just days, the hashtag #CantBeAWoman became number one trending topic in Guatemala, reaching more than 12 million people.
