OVERVIEW

Background

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup approaching, Qatar officially announces a ban on the rainbow flag on its territory. In front of this injustice of which the LGBT cause is then victim the association Stop Homophobie which is a French association, which fights against homophobia everywhere in the world wished to react in collaboration with Pantone which is an international mark, which already supported the LGBT cause. How did you do it? By proposing an LGBT flag whose colors are changed by the Pantone codes, thus allowing to pass the Qatar censorship.

Idea

A revised version of the LGBT flag replacing colors by their Pantone codes to hack prohibition and allow the community to brandish their colors during the world cup.

People could wave this flag or wear the Colors of Love shirt freely and proudly, without attracting the Qatari authorities’ attention.

It was a solution to hijack this ban but also a way to put the spotlight on this problem via influencers and journalists who shared and promoted the campaign.

Strategy

The PR strategy was simple, share as much PR kit as possible with journalists, influencers and supporters who wanted to go to Qatar. Several of these supporters were followed by journalists on the spot while carrying the flag.

Execution

We created a "Colors of love" kit in which we found the flag, a soccer shirt and an LGBT tote bag with pantone codes. This kit was massively distributed to journalists and influencers but also and especially to supporters who wanted to go there.

During the competition, FIFA declared that the "One World" armband (created by UEFA to promote inclusion) would also be prohibited. In reaction, we proposed a "Colors of Love" armband inspired by our flag to the national team captains.

What was meant to be a temporary operation, unfortunately still lasts in time, as many members of the LGBT community in countries where homophobia is condemned, have contacted us to obtain a kit.

Outcome

In view of this obvious injustice, the captain of the German team wished to keep the armband One Love following its prohibition, while Hugo Lloris did not want to take a position. We have therefore immediately rebounded following this prohibition in order to propose an armband overcoming the interdiction by taking up the pantone codes.

We have reached a huge number of people, media, and personalities all over the world:

• More than 416 M media impact

• +602K % of engagement

• More than 2000 operation repeats on social media

Thanks to this impactful campaign, the mayor of Paris sent a personal letter to the charity to express her support, thank them for the fight they have been leading for years.

The partnership between Stop Homophobie and Pantone has had a very positive effect on both of them for their image and the
