Description

‘I know - it’s not easy to get up every day.’ the voice-over tells us at the start of this movie - and yes, it’s true: every moment in life needs a bit of courage. The film tells the story of three very different people and their struggle to find the courage in every-day life: a teen drummer leaves his parents house after an intense fight with his dad, a female steel worker has to stand up for herself in front of her co-workers on the day that she realizes she’s pregnant, and a 5-year old girl has to overcome her fears on the first day of school. The omni-present voice-over connects the three seemingly independent storylines. But as the voiceover guides us through the film, we can’t shake the feeling that their destinies are intertwined. And indeed, the three characters finally clash in a dramatic accident, in which the little girl gets insured. Months later, the steel worker and the drummer visit the girl in a Suva rehabilitation center and all of them show true courage when it really counts.

Execution

SUVA - COURAGE - NIGHT

(DISCLAIMER: The script was originally written in german. This is an english translation)

X1. BLACK

Pouring rain. We can hear dull, loud but unclear voices in a fight. Chairs move. Steps approach.

Music fades in, quietly and softly. The music is not developing yet. It is growing slowly over the first few scenes. Dynamic sound design dominates the soundtrack.

01. EXT. ENTRANCE – NIGHT

Fade-Up from black: Close-Up on a front door of a villa. Fast steps grow louder.

Suddenly, the door opens.

A young man (SIMON, 21) leaves the house, troubled. He puts on his used leather jacket. When his father tries to grab his shoulder, SIMON pushes him away and heads for his car. In the background, his parents observe him worriedly from the front door. It is the end of a severe family fight.

02. INT. ENTRANCE OF AN APARTEMENT / LIVING ROOM / KITCHEN – NIGHT

A self-confident, strong woman (BABS, 41) arrives at her apartment, soaking wet. As she opens the front door, her boyfriend surprises her with a small but personal birthday reception with candles and a mini-cake. They are kissing each other dearly.

Behind the head of her boyfriend we see what she had just bought: A pregnancy test. We end up on BABS’ thoughtful face.

03. INT. BEDROOM LARA – NIGHT

In a children's bedroom: the caring FATHER of LARA is closing the door silently. A brand new knapsack with a big bow is hanging on the doorknob.

Cut to a little girl (LARA, 7): from her bed, Lara watches her father closing the door. She lies in her bed, rigid, and stares at the ceiling. We still hear the storm from outside. The trees from outside and the wind paint spooky shadows on the ceiling.

The shadows of the trees turn into a school building with a little girl in front, wearing a knapsack. The doors of the school building convert into a monstrous, deep hollow which threatens to swallow the little girl.

Zoom to the deep hollow, the storm becomes louder. Black.

X2. BLACK. QUOTATION

We can hear the storm and the clap of thunder from far. A quote is fading in:

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. Winston Churchill

The text fades out. Only the word „courage“ remains.

The music now grows to an emotional film score driving the story forward.

04. EXT. CLOUDS IN THE SKY – EARLY MORNING

The morning sun shoots through dramatic thunderstorm clouds.

05. INT. BEDROOM LARA – EARLY MORNING

The sweet little 7-year old LARA is lying flat on her back in her bed and is still staring at the ceiling.

The alarm clock rings.

LARA squints her eyes while the camera is slowly moving from the ceiling towards her. We can hear a deep, confident male offvoice:

OFFVOICE

I know: it is not easy every day...

Annoyed, LARA pulls the blanket over her head, remains there a moment – but gets up fitfully and turns towards the edge of the bed, still with the blanket over her head.

LARA (7): Is riding home on her scooter with the frog in the preserving jar, glancing at it hoping he will transform into a prince again.

OFFVOICE (CONT’D)

...and maybe-

And now we can see that also SIMON is visiting LARA. Silently, he observes the scene, moved, how Lara takes her first steps with the help of her father.

OFFVOICE (CONT’D)

-if it is a really exceptional day-

His glance sticks with Lara’s father, the image is moving something inside of him. He thinks for a short moment, takes out his cell phone and dials the number of his father.
