Description

An architect's dream of creating a peaceful, virtual Ocean captures hearts globally; In 2017, youth unemployment rate in Korea reached its all-time-high of 11% (Statistics Korea) - unsurprisingly, young talent shifted their attention to stable jobs while only daydreaming of taking risks to follow their true calling. No wonder 'Indie spirit' is what Korean values much, as it represents youth who follows their dream. ABYSSRIUM follows the journey of former architect SH Kim, from his monotonous corporate job to life as an 'indie' game developer in a cramped basement office. As part of , ABYSSRIUM YouTube film demonstrates the active role Google Play plays in supporting 'indie' developers realize their vision in a global setting. This heartwarming story resonated deeply with the Korean public, especially the younger generation, not only it inspires young dreamers and entrepreneurs, but also it significantly enhanced overall perception of mobile game in Korea.

Execution

Mobile game is the most enjoyable entertainments among young Koreans(20s). As popularity of mobile game grows, the more diversified indie games are launched. Google Play discovered one indie game called , which was totally different from typical mobile games. It has peaceful BGM, beautifully designed whale, and all users have to do is tapping the screen from time to time.

We interviewed the developer how he developed his game, and inspired by how he wanted to present the “stress-free moments” to users in Korean society, who are living intense lives. He has never been to commercial nor TV interview before, that at first he was reluctant to join the advertisement . At last, he decided to participate, so he can inspire other people who also wants to be indie game developers. We couldn’t believe he was the first timer in front of camera, because he was pretty good at acting!
