OVERVIEW

Execution

The visual effects are noteworthy for two reasons.

The first is the use of volumetric video. The film was shot with 150 4K cameras. Technology for processing large volumes of video data in real time and at high speeds made it possible to recreate the video live in a 3D space with a mere three-second lag, and control camera angles across a 360-degree panorama. Immediately after filming, the best shots were selected while considering the camera path in free viewpoint video.

The second is the use of rear projection. 3D computer graphics were projected onto a massive LED screen to merge the background with the live action shot in front. The LED panels used for the screen were high-performance monitors with a 1.5 mm pixel pitch. Employing 289 of these panels, the 6,528 × 3,672-pixel screen measured 10,370 mm by 5,831 mm (468 inches), and weighed 2,500 kg (2.8 tons).
