Description

Experience the future of food with Manhattan’s first farm in a shipping container with The Wall Street Journal Future Farm.

To promote the inaugural WSJ Future of Everything Festival in New York, give a taste of what would be discussed at the three day festival.

We took one of the festival topics – the Future of Food – and brought it to life in the center of Manhattan. Both advertising billboard and fully functioning farm. It was staffed by farmers and growing produce throughout the two week period.

The Future Farm launched with a press event and a farmers market in which produce was distributed. The farm was then open for the general public to observe, for private tours to festival goers, and was constantly growing more produce – which was then donated to the food charity City Harvest.

Execution

The Future Farm is an actual demonstration of the future. It gave New Yorkers a taste of the Future Of Everything Festival.

It used 98% less water than a traditional farm. It can grow 4 tons of produce a year That’s the equivalent of a football field’s worth of produce in a space the size of a studio apartment.

The Future Farm grew wasabi arugula, kale, baby radishes, New Red Fire lettuce, Rouxai lettuce, Newham lettuce, Swiss chard, and flowers. A window allowed people to see real farmers tending to the crops inside. It became a selfie magnet for photos with growing produce and otherworldly magenta lighting.

This was be the first time that a shipping container farm was installed in Manhattan. It gave New Yorkers a taste of what the future of farming could be – and also Future of Festival goers the opportunity to take a private tour.
